Educators in Recovery

Our first conference will be in the spring of 2013. Register here to be on our mailing list.  Please send us an email asking us to be added to our list of people who want to learn more and keep informed.

This will be the first gathering of educators in recovery from addiction, mental health, and abuse.   The conference is in its planning stages now, but we are excited to explore the nature and strength of recovering educators in secondary and higher education.  We will also begin an international movement for educators in recovery to protect them from discrimination and harm associated with being outspoken about their recovery in their community.

If you are interested in learning more and being part of the planning process, please feel free to get in contact with us.

Recovering educators have a lot of offer a community and have special needs. It is time we begin to share our stories and have our voice heard. As educators, we are in a unique position to articulate our shared learning in a forum that has credibility.

Here is a sample list of our agenda:

  • Male Educators in Recovery
  • Female Educators in Recovery
  • Pros and Cons of Disclosing Your Recovery
  • Understanding and Developing Appropriate Connections With Students Struggling With Addiction
  • What Does “Recovery” Mean to You? How Do You Define Recovery in Your Own Life?
  • Is Recovery Abstinence?
  • September is National Recover Month – What Does the EiR (Educator in Recovery) Do in Their Community?
  • Recovery is More Than the 12 Steps | What are the paths into recovery?
  • EiR Leadership Certification.  The EiRLC process will create a designation for putting the EiR logo in their classroom and school.  Teacher (EiR) will learn how to advocate for wellness initiatives at school from effective drug education programs to academic environments that are less stressful and health-promoting for community members.
At many schools I notice the rainbow logo in the classroom indicating the teacher is friendly to the LGBT community.  The EiR logo will show the community that the teacher in comfortable and trained in discussing issues around recovery.  It will also indicate the willingness of the teacher to have a conversation about recovery and a commitment to share resources with the student regarding getting help.
